Following the controversy surrounding head injuries during the Six Nations competition in the spring, World Rugby’s CEO has indicated that every head injury will be scrutinised during the eagerly anticipated Rugby World Cup tournament which is just one month away.
With progressive and proactive concussion programmes established within the professional sport, the governing body doesn’t anticipate the established protocols being ignored, but does have the authority to impose fines should any teams ignore the head-injury safety guidelines.
Chief executive Brett Gosper said: “We don’t envisage misuse of the protocols that we have, but we think it’s important to state that non-compliance will be sanctioned, because this is a very important area for us.”
The tournament kicks off on Friday 18 September, with England taking on Fiji at Twickenham.
