A young music fan met one of his music idols, Chris Martin, leader of the band Coldplay, following a pioneering form of music therapy that helped his to recover from a serious brain injury.
Ed Buckly, 22, was studying at Leeds University when he was hit by a speeding taxi as he walked home one night after a party. His injuries were so severe that he was in a coma for six months, eventually waking up but still unable to walk or talk, and with profound memory loss.
Despite this though, Ed could still recall the chords for music, and even in his wheelchair before being able to speak, he was able to play Beatles songs and then Coldplay, whose songs he had learnt before the accident. He found doing so aided his memory and “unblocked” his brain.
Music was a focal point of Ed’s recovery, and he used it to help him put memories in context and recall different people and situations. Experts believe that music can effectively be used to retrain and re-educate the brain after a brain injury, as it involves a complex combination of processes including both perception and memory.
Now Ed has made an astonishing recovery, regaining almost all his lost abilities, even managing to joke about his situation. When Coldplay front man Martin heard about his story, he offered to meet him and personally present him with signed lyrics to their 2011 single Paradise at an awards ceremony in June. Martin described their meeting as ‘amazing… moving and powerful’.
