President Obama has launched an ambitious new project, known as the Brain Initiative, to help increase understanding and improve treatments for a wide range of neurological conditions.
It is hoped that the Brain Initiative (Brain Research Through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies) will use sophisticated technology and mapping techniques to shed light on the vital links between brain functionality and behaviour, ultimately hoping to reduce the impact of life-limiting conditions such as traumatic brain injuries, Alzheimer’s disease and epilepsy.
However, while the project has been granted $100 million of initial funding from federal reserves, enough to kick start it, Obama is seeking further support from companies, research universities, foundations, and philanthropists to ensure that the project can fulfil its true potential.
