Amidst the excitement of the first three days of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, was a stark reminder of the risks associated with participation in winter sports, and the vital role that safety equipment can play in preventing serious injury.

Sarka Pancochova, a 23 year old Czech snowboarder participating in the woman’s slopestyle finals, missed her landing and fell dramatically. The result of this was a significant split through the back of her ski helmet, leaving spectators and viewers horrified at the thought of what might have been had a helmet not been worn.

Pancochova herself brushed off the incident saying ‘Well, it seems broken, but that’s what they are for, right?’.

With several more high risk events scheduled over the coming weeks, we hope that incidents such as this are not repeated, and remind everyone to wear a helmet when taking part in sports that carry a risk of head injury.
