A family of a 22 year old woman in East Oxford have spoken of their relief that a settlement has been reached at the end of a long legal case,

Sophie Collins was involved in a car crash 10 years ago, when she was just 11 years old. She was taken to the John Radclife Hospital, Oxford, who initially treated her for a back injury and grazing to the abdomen and to her pelvis.

However, the hospital failed to spot that she had ruptured her bowel, with the contents entering her blood stream which starved her brain of oxygen and causing serious damage. The initial prognosis was that she would be left blind and paraplegic too.

Miss Collins has made a good recovery, but is still plagued by problems stemming from the brain damage, including incidents of epilepsy, memory loss and extreme fatigue. Now studying part-time for a degree at a university in Wales, she needs the help of four support workers and has to take a blow-up bed to any exams, in case she needs to sleep without leaving the room.

Her mother, Mrs Collins, notes that people don’t always understand the extent of her daughter’s brain injury because she makes such a good “first impression”, but hopes that this will help to raise awareness of them. She also said that the seven figure sum agreed in the settlement will allow the family to plan for the future and allow them to concentrate on “making the most of life”.

Oxford University Hospital NHS Trust admitted negligence, stating that emergency medicine had progressed over the last 10 years  with an increase in diagnostic scans taking place, partly in response to case’s like Miss Collins.
