School children in Plymouth became young campaigners for road safety through the medium of art, to help raise awareness of Road Safety Week 18-24 November.
St Budeaux Foundation Junior School in Plymouth linked up with Wolferstans Solicitors, Brain Injury Group member for the Plymouth area, and took part in a competition to draw or paint the best poster on the theme of road safety. Karen Walker and Andrew Warlow from Wolferstons Solicitors judged the children’s efforts and picked out the best two; one each from the lower and upper year groups. The lucky winners were given prizes of WHSmith vouchers, donated by the Group, along with luminous slap-on wrist bands for the runners-up to help children stay visible in the dark.
Andrew Warlow, lead solicitor from Wolferstans said: “It is important to keep emphasising the road safety message to our children as they face ever increasing dangers on our busy roads. Our local primary school is situated on a main bus route in a busy residential area and so it is vital that the children appreciate the dangers of crossing the road.”
The activity is particularly timely as it coincides with some new research, brought out by the Brain Injury Group, which suggests that children may be putting themselves at risk on the roads. A survey of 1746 children between eight and eleven years old, found that 90% of children admitted running into the road while playing with their friends.
50% of brain injuries are caused by road traffic collisions so the Brain Injury Group supports Road Safety Week, an awareness initiative delivered by the charity Brake, to raise awareness of the importance of good road safety behaviour amongst school children.
