The damaging effect on the brain of certain sports – particularly boxing – has been brought into question by London neuroscientist John Hardy.

Hardy’s work specialises in Alzheimer’s and dementia and he points out that the damaged brain tissue of athletes is not dissimilar to that of patients with these diseases.

He fears that damage inflicted through contact sports can lead to Alzheimer’s, dementia and other neurological disorders.  He cites boxers as being at most risk – and expresses concern that this sport is unique in that extra safety measures can’t realistically be brought into action without destroying the nature of the sport itself. http://uk.news.yahoo.com/science-brain-injury-inspire-ban-035006456–nfl.html#0Al9IGP
