The US Department of Defense is investing $40million into direct brain recording, a fast developing branch of neuroscience, with the aim of developing new treatments for the impact of traumatic brain injury (TBI) on memory and reasoning.

Preliminary research suggests that scientists can sharpen some kinds of memory by directly recording – and stimulating – circuits in the brain.  This is in addition to an investment of similar scale earlier this year into brain recording techniques to relieve mood problems caused by TBI.

Over 270,000 US veterans of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan have been diagnosed with traumatic brain injury.
