Finding Support Together: Families Affected by the Ockenden Maternity Review
Nottingham Racecourse – Tuesday 3rd November, Drop-in between 2pm-6pm
On Tuesday 3th November, Big Stepping Stones, in partnership with Brain Injury Group, will be hosting a drop-in support event at Nottingham Racecourse for families affected by maternity or neonatal care at Nottingham University Hospitals, including those affected by the issues highlighted in the Ockenden Maternity Review.
The Ockenden Review brought concerns about maternity and neonatal care at Nottingham University Hospitals to wider attention. But for families who have lived through these experiences, the need for answers, support and understanding does not end with the publication of a report.
For some families, the impact can continue for years. A child may be living with a disability, including a brain injury, while parents navigate appointments, therapies, education and care ā often while trying to understand what happened and what the future may hold.
Support for children and their families
Big Stepping Stones supports families whose babies have been affected by complications during birth or by concerns about neonatal care. We help families access specialist advice and support across areas including rehabilitation, care, education and legal matters. This can include guidance for families considering whether their childās injury may have resulted from medical negligence during birth or neonatal care.
Our event provides an informal, welcoming space where families can come together, find out more about the support available, speak with people who have relevant professional or lived experience, and ask questions without pressure or judgement. Families will also have the opportunity to access information and guidance from our in-house midwife and connect with others who understand their experiences.
- Speak with other families in a welcoming environment
- Access professional resources and guidance
- Hear from families and professionals through short talks
- Receive a clinical assessment with our experienced midwife
Just as importantly, the event is an opportunity to connect with other families who understand the realities of living with childhood brain injury.
Peer support can be incredibly valuable. Sometimes, simply meeting another parent who understands the appointments, uncertainty, challenges and everyday realities can help families feel less alone.
You don’t have to navigate it alone
The impact of a serious injury around birth extends beyond the child. Parents and wider families can find themselves balancing their childās immediate needs with concerns about their development, education, independence and long-term future.
If you or your family would like to access support and guidance following, come along, meet the team and find out more and connect with others who understand.
