A Florida-based biomechanics expert has announced a breakthrough in (American) football helmet technology which could provide 50% more protection against head injuries and concussion.
Sports-related concussion has had a particularly high profile in recent months following several controversial incidents of players sustaining injuries in the 2014 World Cup tournament. Whether concussion in sport can be prevented is a moot point in many quarters, but research suggests that even mild injuries can result in long lasting damage and effects.
The Lloyd Industries, Inc research team, led by Dr John Lloyd who specialises in the biomechanics of head and brain injury resulting from various impacts, has announced a technological breakthrough that they maintain could provide up o 50% more protection against (American) football head injuries and concussion.
The technology would be equally applicable to other sports helmets and have both military and motor racing applications, with the new materials being both lighter and more comfortable than existing products.
