Judy Taylor’s life as she knew it changed dramatically one day in July 2008. Her husband of 20 years, Simon, suffered severe head injuries when falling from a vehicle at work.

After being treated at the scene, Simon was airlifted to King’s College Hospital, London, where he was induced into a coma for the next nine hours. Simon’s brain began to swell, leading doctors to remove a section of his skull to relieve the pressure. Two days later, Judy and her two sons, Ben now 26 and Josh now 24, received the worst possible news. Doctors revealed that the damage suffered by the fall was so severe that it was unlikely Simon would make a recovery. They suggested that he would never be able to walk or feed himself again, and would require round the clock nursing care.

Simon was eventually moved to Winchester House, in Wouldham, close to their family home. During routine surgery in October 2011, Simon contracted pneumonia, with a further bout proving fatal just five months later. Simon died peacefully at Winchester House.

Despite still feeling immense pain and heartache, Judy refuses to dwell on the negatives. She has joined forces with four women who have endured similar circumstances to launch ‘Brain Injury is Big’ a charity for families going through similar ordeals. They have a website and online forum providing peer to peer support for carers of people with severe brain injuries, and have recently launched a helpline too, call 07902 770 999.
