Some head injury trauma patients, and those who have sustained brain damage at birth, are being treated with a chemical more commonly viewed as having purely cosmetic affects.
Botox, the toxin used to smooth out wrinkles and lines in people’s faces, is being successfully used to reduce the symptoms of more serious medical problems.
For instance, a 33-year-old man in Cumbria has been given a new lease of life after botox injections had an impressive effect on his chronic migraines. This new treatment is being provided to him by Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle.
The father-of-two was unfortunate enough to suffer two serious head injuries, one in 1998, and the second in the year 2000. Despite recovering well from these incidents, he was left with life-changing headaches which stopped him working.
Now he has begun to receive 30 to 40 injections every three months, in his head, neck, and shoulders, which he states has “transformed” his life.
Another individual benefiting from botox is a 16-year-old cerebral palsy sufferer in America. Near-constant leg spasms have meant that walking is very difficult for the young man.
However, he has recently begun a course of botox, during which his doctor injects the toxin into his hamstrings, that has started to relax the muscles and enable the 16-year-old to move more easily. “I felt great. Better than I have in years,” he says.
His doctor explains, “You have stroke patients, head injury patients, spinal cord injury patients, multiple sclerosis patients that all have an element of muscle spasm that Botox, botulism toxin, can be used for, and used for successfully.”
