Head Forward Centre

Head Forward Centre is a charity based in Withington, Manchester. Established in 2000, it specialises in supporting people who have experienced an acquired brain injury (ABI) to re-integrate socially. To prevent deterioration and escalating social and family difficulties — and the associated financial and societal costs — individuals benefit from a more socially integrated approach. Head Forward provides an affordable, longer-term day service that reduces isolation and loneliness while offering valuable respite for families and carers.

The centre is located on the accessible ground floor of Withington Methodist Church. It does not provide personal care; most attendees are able to attend independently, although some attend with a personal assistant or family member.

Head Forward offers a wide range of enjoyable activities both within the centre and out in the community. These include yoga, walking football, relaxation sessions, arts and crafts, photography, games, pool, cinema trips, accessible cycling, and walks. The centre provides a friendly, relaxed environment where individuals who may have become socially isolated following a brain injury can participate at their own pace and rebuild confidence. Information and guidance are also available on a range of practical issues, including navigating welfare benefits and care funding. Head Forward is a contracted provider for Manchester City Council.

The service is highly affordable, costing £43.80 per full day (10:00am–3:30pm) or £25 per half day, and operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Head Forward can assist with adult social care assessments where required and provide support and signposting for welfare benefit claims, including PIP. While transport is not provided, the team can offer support in exploring and resolving transport options.
