One Punch – An Impact That Lasts a Lifetime

This week marks One Punch Awareness Week (22nd – 26th September 2025), highlighting the devastating and lifelong impact a single moment of violence can have on individuals and their families. It serves as an important reminder of the need for education to encourage people to stop and think before acting.

In an example story written by Maria Dallas of Switalskis Solicitors, a member of the Brain Injury Group, we see how an assault on a night out and in less than a second can leave the victim, Dave, with a severe brain injury from a single punch. From that moment, Dave and his family’s lives were changed forever.

Traumatic Brain Injury – Dave’s Assault

Dave’s story starts with an ordinary night out, which suddenly led to a disagreement that escalated unexpectedly.

During a night out at around 9 pm, Dave and his mates decided to go to the next pub. Dave had drunk less than his friends and felt ok; his friends had drunk slightly more and were a bit loud, but still meant no harm.

At the next pub, one of the doormen didn’t want to let some of Dave’s friends in as he thought that they had drunk too much. This led to one of Dave’s friends stepping towards the doorman, which Dave then tried to break up to defuse the situation; however, this caused the doorman to react and punch Dave.

Although he was only hit once, it was hard enough to send Dave back and hit the floor, where he lay unresponsive for a few minutes until an ambulance was called.

For victims like Dave, the initial assault was only the beginning of a long, complex journey involving medical intervention, specialist rehabilitation, and emotional adjustment.

It began as a single act of violence, but it resulted inĀ permanent brain damage, a lifetime of medical care, and emotional pain that ripples through families.

We share this story as part of our support forĀ One Punch Awareness Week. These types of incidents are rare, but when they do happen, the consequences are often life-altering.

The effects of a single punch go beyond the immediate physical injury. Despite the visible wounds healing, the hidden consequences, especially those involvingĀ traumatic brain injury (TBI), often last a lifetime. Brain injuries resulting from assaults are typically classified as either moderate or severe. These injuries can impair a person’sĀ speech, memory, motor functions, and personality, sometimes leaving individuals permanently dependent on care.

One Punch Awareness Week

Held annually in September byĀ One Punch UK,Ā One Punch Awareness WeekĀ aims to highlight the outcomes that can result from a single moment of violence. The campaign’s mission is to prevent future assaults by educating the public about the risks and to support those already affected.

One Punch UKĀ was founded by Maxine Thompson-Curl, whose son Kristian sadly died after being punched during a night out in 2010. Since then, the organisation has worked tirelessly to raise awareness, influence legal change, and provide guidance to victims’ families.

One Punch UK states:Ā ā€œOne Punch Awareness Week is about education, prevention, and honouring those who have lost their lives to senseless violence.ā€

At Brain Injury Group, we work alongside those raising awareness, as well as those whose lives have been significantly changed by a one-punch incident or the loss of a loved one. Through real-life stories, legal expertise, and access to care, we help people affected to recover as effectively as possible.

Legal Support After An Assault Induced TBI

The impact of a one-punch incident extends far beyond the immediate physical harm, as shown in both Dave’s story and Kristian’s case. For victims and their families, as well as for perpetrators, it often marks the beginning of a long and difficult legal journey. In Dave’s case, shared by Switalskis, the offender was convicted and sentenced, yet no punishment could undo the life-changing injuries and lasting consequences he suffered.

Switalskis has supported many individuals and families affected by one-punch incidents and similar circumstances. They provide guidance on pursuing compensation for injuries and their long-term effects, whether through a civil claim against an individual or company, or via the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority. They also offer support with related matters, including Power of Attorney, Deputyship, and Criminal Law advice.

Emotional Fallout for Families

Dave’s story is an example, but for families like Dave’s, navigating the justice system is just one part of the recovery journey. Many experience ongoing trauma, guilt, anger, and frustration. In some cases, victims require 24/7 care, and loved ones must adjust to new roles as carers, advocates, or guardians.

How Brain Injury Group Supports Victims & Families

At Brain Injury Group, we are committed to supporting individuals who have sustained a brain injury as a result of violence, including TBIs induced by assaults. These injuries often requireĀ specialist legal guidance, long-term rehabilitation, and practical family support.
