For most teenagers, prom is a celebration of friendships, achievements and the exciting future ahead. It’s a chance to dress up, make memories and mark the end of one chapter before beginning the next.

For Keyah, prom represented all of those things, but it also became a powerful reminder that a brain injury should never define a person’s future or prevent them from celebrating life’s important milestones.

Living with a brain injury, cerebral palsy and relying on a PEG tube for nutrition presents challenges that many people never have to consider. Despite this, Keyah has continued to approach life with determination, embracing opportunities and celebrating milestones alongside her peers.

Like every other young person attending prom, she wanted to feel confident, comfortable and herself on one of the most memorable evenings of her school life.

Keyah

Making Prom Accessible

Determined that her daughter would experience the same magical evening as her classmates, Keyah’s mum, Laura, set out to find a solution that would meet her daughter’s individual needs.

She approached bespoke designer Ethan Leyland of Unpicked Seams, who worked closely with the family to design a beautiful, accessible prom dress.

Rather than asking Keyah to compromise on style or comfort, Ethan created a bespoke gown that reflected her personality while accommodating her PEG tube and ensuring she could enjoy the evening with confidence.

The finished dress was more than simply an outfit. It represented thoughtful, inclusive design and demonstrated how small adaptations can remove barriers that might otherwise prevent someone from fully participating in life’s special moments.

Looking Beyond a Brain Injury

Keyah’s story is an important reminder that while a brain injury may bring lifelong challenges, it does not define a person’s identity, ambitions or future.

For many families, everyday life involves adapting to physical, cognitive or communication challenges. However, with the right support, understanding and willingness to think differently, those challenges do not have to prevent young people from reaching important milestones or making lasting memories.

Whether it’s attending prom, starting university, finding employment or achieving personal goals, every individual deserves the opportunity to participate fully in life.

Celebrating Inclusion

Stories like Keyah’s show what can be achieved when families, communities and professionals work together to remove barriers rather than accept them.

Laura’s determination to ensure her daughter experienced prom, combined with Ethan’s thoughtful and inclusive approach to design, meant Keyah was able to celebrate alongside her friends, feeling confident and comfortable throughout the evening.

Her story highlights that accessibility isn’t about making people fit the world around them—it’s about creating environments, opportunities and experiences that enable everyone to be included.
