Two Brain Injuries Aren’t the Same
Recovering from a brain injury is never a uniform experience, the effects, journey, and potential can differ dramatically. In this article, we draw on the experiences of two individuals supported by CHD Living to highlight how each brain injury is unique — and to emphasise why care and rehabilitation must be tailored to the person.
Everyone’s Path Looks Different
CHD Living reflects on the unpredictability of life after brain injury, highlighting how recovery rarely follows a straight path:
“No two brain injuries are the same – and no two days are the same for those living with one.”
This unpredictability means that people living with acquired brain injury (ABI) often experience fluctuations that can vary not only from person to person but from day to day. Fatigue, memory lapses, pain, and anxiety can emerge suddenly or shift in intensity, while reduced mobility and changes in mood or behaviour may affect daily routines and relationships.
These challenges can make progress feel inconsistent — some days marked by achievement and independence, others by setbacks and frustration. Yet it is precisely this variability that underlines the need for flexible, personalised support to help individuals manage the ups and downs of life after brain injury.
Two Stories, Two Journeys
Nigel: Brain Stem Stroke and the Test of Resilience
As a professional HGV driver, Nigel suffered a brain stem stroke in September 2024. He arrived at CHD Living’s Bagshot Park Neurorehabilitation Centre with a tracheostomy, feeding tube, severe weakness, and impaired speech, completely dependent on care.
CHD Living provided tailored, person-centred rehabilitation, with a multidisciplinary team including specialist nurses, therapists, and clinical psychologists, adjusting his programme to Nigel’s condition.
Some days, fatigue limited his participation; on others, he made significant breakthroughs. Over time, their support helped him progress from wheelchair use to walking indoors independently, and his tracheostomy was removed after 189 days. Post-discharge, Nigel continues to rebuild life at home and has even returned to cycling.
John’s Milestone: A Testament to Long-Term Progress
Supporting John to Paris,” CHD Living tells the story of John Lawas, who suffered a complex brain injury in a road traffic accident during his teenage years. At one point, John was PEG-fed and unable to walk. Over ten years, through determination and carefully tailored support from CHD’s Complex Care team, he made remarkable strides. He now eats level six meals, communicates confidently, and continues building physical strength and independence.
To mark his 25th birthday, CHD supported John’s first trip abroad since his injury — to Paris. He described it as “absolutely surreal”:
“Watching the city lights from up there, surrounded by a completely new environment and atmosphere, felt absolutely surreal. It truly was a once-in-a-lifetime moment.”
The trip was meticulously planned: from accessible lodging to medical logistics and daily routines. Two carers accompanied him at all times, under a nurse-led plan tailored fully to his needs.
As Nicole Fitzsimons, CHD’s Group Branch Manager, said:
“Supporting someone to live their life in full – to travel, to explore, to feel joy – is what great care is all about.”
