Post-Concussion Symptoms

What Are Persistent Post-Concussion Symptoms?

Most people recover from a concussion within a few weeks. But if you’re still experiencing headaches, dizziness, brain fog or fatigue weeks or months later, it can be frustrating and difficult to not know what’s wrong.
Ā
These ongoing post-concussion symptoms are known as persistent post-concussion symptoms (PPCS), also called post-concussion syndrome (PCS). Although the initial injury may have healed, the after-effects can continue to affect work, study, exercise and everyday life.Ā

The reasons why some people develop post-concussion symptoms are still being researched, but early assessment and appropriate rehabilitation can help identify the factors affecting recovery and provide the right support.

Post-Concussion Symptoms

The symptoms can vary from person to person and may affect physical, cognitive and/or emotional wellbeing. Common ones include:

  • Persistent headaches
  • Dizziness or balance problems
  • Brain fog
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Memory problems
  • Fatigue
  • Sensitivity to light or noise
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Sleep problems
  • Anxiety or low mood
  • Neck pain

Symptoms often fluctuate from day to day. You may have good days and bad days, and activities such as work, exercise, screen time or busy environments can sometimes make symptoms worse.

When Should You Seek Help?

If your post-concussion symptoms continue for more than a few weeks, are getting worse or are affecting your daily life, it’s important to seek medical advice. Your GP or healthcare professional can assess your recovery, rule out other possible causes and refer you to specialist services where appropriate.
Ā
Early intervention can help identify what’s contributing to your symptoms and ensure you receive the most appropriate post-concussion treatment.

Post-Concussion Symptom Treatment

Recovery from persistent concussion symptoms often requires more than rest alone. Because every concussion is different, post-concussion treatment should be tailored to the individual’s symptoms and goals. Depending on your needs, treatment may include a variety of therapies and support such as:

Recovery isn’t always linear, as Clare’s post-concussion recovery story demonstrates. It’s common for symptoms to improve gradually, with occasional setbacks along the way. The right assessment and rehabilitation can help you better understand your symptoms and return to life as you know it.
